David Kuhn was born in Nashville on May 6, 1992. Shockingly, his voice entirely lacks a Southern twang. However, the twang found another way into young David’s heart. After a particularly awful day of fifth grade, David found solace in the sounds of a Queen CD playing in his mother’s car. For his twelfth birthday, David received his first guitar, a Squier Stratocaster, and immediately began taking lessons and imitating his favorite classic rock guitarists: Brian May, Jimi Hendrix, Angus Young, and–still his favorite musician of all time–Jimmy Page. As David progressed, he began to discover and play music across different genres. Hoping to develop a better connection to his elderly grandparents (and also hoping to get into music school), David began to study and play jazz and swing music. Eventually, studying jazz, rock, and classical styles simultaneously led him to many new influences such as Allan Holdsworth, Van Halen, Hiatus Kaiyote, Herbie Hancock, Johann Sebastian Bach, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Grant Green, Jim Hall, Jason Becker, Wes Montgomery, and many others.
Upon graduating from the University School of Nashville, David brought his twang to the New School in the fall of 2011. Although at first intimidated by the heavily talented New York scene, David practiced hard and began playing music in groups with his friends. He has studied, performed, and recorded with greats such as Ben Street, Peter Bernstein, Vic Juris, Julian Lage, Hal Galper, Nir Felder, Peter Mazza, Kirk Nurock, Roy Vogt, and renowned Nashville guitar guru Shane Roberts. His talent, efforts, and professionalism landed him a job as a Gig Office Bandleader at the New School and a beloved weekly gig at the super yummy Bite restaurant on 14th Street on Fridays. After graduating from the New School in the Spring of 2015, David moved to New York's Upper West Side to finally live out his dream of being a professional musician. He cooks a mean tuna steak.
Although he is a very capable sideman, David currently leads two unique New York-based groups. The first group is Bite Trio, a folk-jazz crossover band which relies heavily on collective improvisation and sensitive listening. The second group is Light Brand, an adventurous progressive rock outfit which showcases powerful riffs, harmonically dazzling compositions, and poignant lyrics.
As a guitarist, David is not only capable of playing blistering, technically demanding, and harmonically complex lines. He is also a very soulful, playful, and interactive musician who strives to play what a piece needs in the moment. David plays and writes in a way that invites people to experience his emotions and life experiences first hand. His wrought compositions have been described as works, "not only reflective of his personality but of his life experience. They express the precariousness and fragility of life, love, and loss, expressing the myriad of emotions he has experienced." However, above all else, David feels that all music he plays is simply fun.
